The management of Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has formally lodged a complaint following a violent invasion of student hostels by personnel from the Nigerian Army Depot in Osogbo.
The attack, which occurred on Monday night, has left students traumatized. Newly recruited soldiers reportedly stormed approximately 20 hostels in the off-campus student community, including well-known residences like Cristalag and Kings and Queens hostels .
Assault and Theft
Witnesses report that the soldiers unleashed violence on occupants, assaulting both male and female students . During the incident, the soldiers allegedly seized over 60 mobile phones and other electronic gadgets .
There are also disturbing reports of sexual harassment. Some female students alleged they were forced to strip and were sexually assaulted, while others reportedly were made to dance naked . Male students were allegedly beaten .
University Reacts
A visibly angry Vice-Chancellor, Professor Clement Adebooye, visited the affected hostels on Tuesday and condemned the incident .
“We have reported to the management of the depot. It is sad that the Army Depot, located close to the campus, which we felt would give us security cover, could eventually release men that will subject our students to this kind of harrowing experience,” the VC lamented .
Calls for Justice
The Coordinator of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Zone D, Josiah Adeyemo, has called on President Bola Tinubu and the Chief of Army Staff to intervene and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice .
As of the time of this report, the Nigerian Army has yet to issue an official response to the serious allegations .
