Tragedy as Gunmen Invade Plateau Community, Kill One, Injure Another

Jos, Plateau State – A wave of fresh violence swept through a quiet community in Plateau State on Tuesday, as yet-unidentified gunmen launched a deadly attack that left one person dead and another severely injured.

According to initial reports, the assailants stormed the community in the early hours of June 9, 2026, catching residents off guard. Gunshots rang out for several minutes, sending panic through the neighborhood before security forces were alerted to the scene.

An eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity said the attackers appeared to have targeted specific individuals, though the motive remains unclear. “They came suddenly, shooting sporadically. Before anyone could raise an alarm, one person had been hit fatally. Another person was seriously wounded and has been rushed to a hospital,” the witness said.

The injured victim is said to be receiving treatment, though medical sources have yet to disclose the severity of the wounds.

Local security agencies have since deployed tactical teams to the area to pursue the fleeing gunmen and prevent further escalation. A search operation is reportedly underway in nearby bushes and abandoned structures.

The Plateau State Police Command is yet to release an official statement on the incident, but a senior security source confirmed the attack and assured that investigations have commenced.

“We are aware of the unfortunate incident. Our men are on the ground, and we are working to track down those responsible. We urge residents to remain calm and report any suspicious movements to the nearest security post,” the source stated.

Plateau State, particularly its rural communities, has witnessed recurring security challenges, including attacks by suspected bandits, herder-farmer clashes, and isolated acts of communal violence. Tuesday’s attack adds to a growing list of tragic incidents that have claimed lives and displaced families across the North-Central region over the past year.

Residents are now calling on the government to intensify security patrols and deploy more personnel to vulnerable areas, especially at night when such attacks often occur.

“We cannot continue to live in fear. Every week, there is a new story of someone killed or kidnapped. The government must act now,” a community leader lamented.

As of press time, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Authorities have advised citizens to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary movement in high-risk zones until the situation is fully contained.
