Maiduguri, Borno State – The Borno State Police Command has arrested an 18-year-old suspect in connection with the alleged killing of a yet-to-be-identified individual, recovering a knife believed to be the murder weapon, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
The arrest follows a reported incident within the state capital, Maiduguri, or a nearby community, where the victim was found with fatal stab wounds. Police operatives attached to a divisional headquarters responded to a distress call and quickly moved to the scene, where preliminary investigations pointed to the teenage suspect.
According to a statement from the Borno Police Public Relations Officer, operatives recovered a blood-stained knife from the suspect’s possession during a search. The weapon has since been bagged as evidence and is expected to undergo forensic analysis.
“The suspect, aged 18, is currently in our custody and is assisting with ongoing investigations. A knife suspected to have been used in the act has been recovered. Efforts are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances leading to the alleged killing and to identify the victim fully,” the PPRO stated.
Police sources indicate that the suspect and the victim may have had a prior altercation, though authorities have not yet confirmed whether the incident was a result of a personal dispute, an armed robbery attempt, or other motives.
Residents of the area where the body was discovered reportedly alerted security agents after hearing cries for help late on Monday night. By the time police arrived, the assailant had fled but was later apprehended following a brief manhunt within the neighborhood.
The Commissioner of Police for Borno State has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter, directing that all individuals linked to the incident be interrogated and that forensic protocols be strictly followed.
“The command will not tolerate any form of violent crime, regardless of the age of the perpetrator. We assure the public that justice will be pursued diligently,” the CP added.
The teenage suspect is expected to be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of the police investigation.
Meanwhile, the Borno Police Command has called on residents to remain calm and to always settle disputes through lawful means rather than resorting to violence.
More details to follow as the investigation unfolds.
