Umuahia, Abia State – A cloud of grief has descended on a community in Abia State following the tragic deaths of two of its indigenes in separate auto accidents over the past 24 hours, plunging residents into mourning.
The two victims, whose identities have yet to be officially released pending family notification, reportedly lost their lives in two unrelated road crashes along different routes in the state. Community leaders described the incidents as a double tragedy that has left the area shaken.
According to eyewitness accounts, the first accident occurred in the early hours of Monday along the ever-busy Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene road. A commercial bus reportedly lost control while attempting to avoid a pothole, veering off the road and crashing into a roadside ditch. One indigene of the community, who was a passenger in the vehicle, died on the spot. Several others sustained varying degrees of injury and are receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
The second accident took place later that evening along the Aba–Port Harcourt expressway. Preliminary reports suggest a head-on collision between a private car and a heavily loaded truck. The community indigene driving the car was pronounced dead upon arrival at a nearby medical facility. The truck driver reportedly fled the scene before security personnel arrived.
A community elder, who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed deep sorrow over the incidents.
“This is a devastating blow to our community. Losing two vibrant sons and daughters within hours of each other in road accidents is almost too much to bear. We are still waiting for official confirmation of their identities, but the pain is already very real,” the elder said.
The Abia State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed both accidents in a brief statement issued on Tuesday. The Sector Commander expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and reiterated calls for motorists to exercise caution on the roads.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that speed and poor road conditions may have contributed to the first crash, while wrongful overtaking is being looked into in the second. We advise all drivers to obey traffic regulations and avoid night travel where possible,” the statement read in part.
Meanwhile, members of the affected community have begun gathering for traditional mourning rites. Local youth groups have also called on the Abia State Government to urgently rehabilitate the affected road segments and install safety signage to prevent future occurrences.
One resident lamented: “We bury too many of our people because of preventable crashes. When will the government take our roads seriously?”
As of press time, the bodies of the deceased had been deposited at a morgue in Umuahia, where autopsies are expected to be conducted. The FRSC has promised a full investigation into both incidents.
The community has declared a three-day mourning period in honor of the two fallen indigenes.
