Bandits Kill Teacher, Abduct Candidates Writing NECO Exam in Borno

Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists attacked Government Day Secondary School in Lassa town, Askira/Uba LGA, Borno State, on Monday morning, killing a teacher and abducting an unspecified number of students writing the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination .

The attack occurred around 9:00 am, with heavily armed insurgents reportedly dressed in military camouflage and riding motorcycles, storming the community on a busy market day . The attackers fired sporadically, causing panic among students, teachers, and residents before whisking away an unknown number of candidates and teachers into the bush .

Security Forces Response

The Borno State Police Command has deployed security operatives to the area, with the Area Commander in Askira/Uba leading a coordinated search-and-rescue operation . Police Public Relations Officer ASP Nahum Daso confirmed the incident, stating that security forces confronted the attackers and are currently combing surrounding forests to locate the abducted students .

Eyewitness Accounts

Residents alleged that Nigerian military troops stationed in the area had left on patrol to nearby Uba, approximately 16 kilometers away, just before the bandits struck . A resident stated, "The soldiers were not around when the terrorists invaded. They came in large numbers, firing sporadically and causing panic everywhere. They took away students writing NECO and their teachers" .

The Special Adviser to Adamawa State Governor on Media and Strategy, Mr. Solomon Kwamagar, a Lassa resident, confirmed the attackers came through the market and invaded the school, killing one teacher and taking away all students in classrooms .

Casualty Details

While police could not immediately confirm fatalities, eyewitnesses reported that at least one teacher was killed and another sustained gunshot injuries . Some residents claimed two teachers and one female student were killed, with the student reportedly shot in the mouth .

Recent Pattern of Attacks

This attack follows a similar incident on May 15, when terrorists abducted 42 pupils from Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School in the same local government area, who remain in captivity .
