Abia Police Arrest Two Suspects for Vandalizing, Stealing Government Property

Umuahia, Abia State – Operatives of the Abia State Police Command have arrested two suspects in connection with the vandalism and theft of government property, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.

The suspects, identified as Chinedu Okoro and Emeka Eze (surnames withheld pending court proceedings), were apprehended following intelligence-led operations conducted by detectives attached to the Command's Anti-Vandalism Unit.

According to police sources, the arrests followed credible reports of ongoing vandalism of public infrastructure in the Umuahia area. Items recovered from the suspects include armored cables, iron fittings, and other materials allegedly dismantled from government installations.

Police Confirmation

Confirming the arrest, the Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen Chinaka, stated that the Command had intensified surveillance and patrols to curb the rising incidents of vandalism targeting critical government infrastructure.

"The suspects were arrested in the early hours of June 24, 2026, at a location where they were attempting to transport stolen items," the PPRO disclosed. "Recovered exhibits have been taken into custody, and investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of their involvement and the location of other stolen items."

ASP Chinaka noted that preliminary investigations suggest the suspects may be part of a larger syndicate operating across the state, engaging in the theft of electrical cables, manhole covers, and construction materials from public works.

Government Infrastructure Under Threat

Vandalism of government properties, particularly electrical installations and road infrastructure, has become a recurring challenge in Abia State, leading to significant financial losses and setbacks in development projects. The Abia State Government had earlier raised alarm over the rising cost of replacing damaged public utilities.

Warning to Perpetrators

The Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, warned that the Command would not relent in its efforts to bring perpetrators of such criminal acts to justice. He reiterated that vandalism of government property would be treated with the utmost seriousness, and those caught would face the full wrath of the law.

"We will not allow a few individuals to undermine the developmental efforts of the state government," CP Isa said. "This Command is fully committed to protecting public assets and ensuring that offenders are prosecuted without delay."

Appeal to the Public

The Police Command called on members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities relating to vandalism or theft of government property to the nearest police station or via the Command’s emergency lines.

The suspects are expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
