World Cup 2026: “I Love What You Did” – Thierry Henry Sends Message to Ronaldo

Thierry Henry has offered a glowing tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo following Portugal's commanding 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan, praising a moment of selflessness that signaled a vital change in the captain's approach.

The Fox Sports analyst had been among Ronaldo's most vocal critics after Portugal's lackluster 1-1 draw with DR Congo in their Group K opener. Henry pointed to a specific incident where Ronaldo's movement blocked a potential goalscoring opportunity for Bruno Fernandes, arguing that "the team needs to score, not you need to score".

However, Ronaldo delivered a resounding response in Houston on Tuesday. The 41-year-old scored twice, becoming the first player in history to find the net in six different World Cups and taking his tournament tally to 10 goals – surpassing the legendary Eusebio as Portugal's all-time leading World Cup scorer.

The Moment That Changed Henry's Mind

What impressed Henry most was Ronaldo's role in Portugal's second goal. In the 17th minute, Portugal won a free-kick just outside the penalty area. Ronaldo stood over the ball in his familiar position, drawing the full attention of the Uzbekistan wall and goalkeeper. Instead of taking the shot himself, he served as a decoy while Nuno Mendes ran across and fired a low effort into the corner.

"If one thing I wanted to mention, I said, the team has to score, not you. I love what he did at the free-kick," Henry said on Fox Sports. "Yes, he surprised everybody. It's a team spirit guy. It's how you lead your team, and you share. Well done. It's what I like to see, Ronaldo".

Henry also praised Ronaldo's improved movement for his opening goal, noting that the veteran forward attacked the near post rather than drifting into an offside position as he had done against DR Congo. The French legend even drew a comparison to former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, highlighting the tactical intelligence behind Ronaldo's positioning.

Portugal Back on Track

The emphatic victory lifted Portugal to second place in Group K with four points, trailing leaders Colombia who have six points. Roberto Martinez's side will face Colombia in their final group game this weekend, with top spot and a favorable knockout bracket position at stake.

For Ronaldo, the performance silenced doubts about his place in the starting lineup and reaffirmed his capacity to lead Portugal on the biggest stage – even when his role involves more than just finding the back of the net.
