BEDFORD, UK – A train driver has lost his life and 89 passengers were injured, 11 of them seriously, after two passenger trains collided on a railway line near Bedford on Friday evening. The crash, described by witnesses as resembling "a bomb explosion," has triggered a major emergency response and a full investigation into one of the UK's worst rail accidents in recent years.
The collision occurred at approximately 5:15 PM on the line between Bedford and Luton. According to preliminary reports, a Nottingham-to-London St Pancras service had stopped due to a safety fault when it was struck from behind by a Corby-to-London St Pancras train.
Scenes of Chaos and Bloodshed
Passengers have recounted harrowing scenes of devastation inside the carriages following the high-impact collision.
"It was a massive bang. I opened my eyes and that's when I saw people on the floor with blood everywhere," said Teresa Itabor, who was travelling to London for her birthday.
Brett Byatt, a passenger on one of the trains, described the widespread injuries: "I'd probably say 90% of the people on my carriage had injuries. Everyone else had either a serious wound that was bleeding profusely, or a situation where they couldn't stand, or couldn't move their neck."
The force of the impact threw passengers into one another, with some sustaining bleeding from their eyes, noses and mouths. Student Qunnie Wu told of the desperate atmosphere: "People were screaming and crying. They were screaming for help."
Images from the scene showed damaged train carriages, injured passengers receiving roadside treatment, and emergency crews working frantically to assist those trapped or unable to move.
Emergency Services Mobilised
Police, firefighters, paramedics and multiple air ambulances rushed to the scene, declaring a major incident. Authorities confirmed that one driver, operating the 4:40 PM Corby service, was killed in the crash. The train drivers' union ASLEF confirmed the death, with General Secretary Dave Calfe stating that the railway industry would be "feeling the sadness and sorrow" of the loss.
Investigation Underway
Investigators are now working to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the crash. The focus is currently on why the Nottingham service stopped due to a safety fault and why the following train failed to stop in time.
Rail operators have urged passengers to avoid travelling on affected routes while recovery work and investigations continue. Support is being provided to injured passengers and their families as authorities work to piece together the events that led to this tragic incident.
The identity of the deceased driver has not yet been released. Our thoughts are with the families and all those affected by this devastating event.
