The Nigeria Police Force has officially dismissed viral social media claims that its operatives allowed armed bandits to pass through a checkpoint unchallenged in Katsina State. The Force clarified that the individuals in the video are actually recognized members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) and registered hunters supporting security operations.
Clarification from Police Headquarters
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okonkon Edem Iniedu, strongly refuted the misleading narrative accompanying the widely circulated video.
"For the avoidance of doubt, the individuals featured in the video are not bandits," Iniedu stated. "They are duly recognized members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) and registered hunters who are actively supporting ongoing security operations in collaboration with security agencies in Musawa and Matazu Local Government Areas of Katsina State."
Routine Interaction, Not a Security Breach
The police spokesperson explained that the video actually captured a routine interaction between a police officer and these security volunteers. They were en route to a designated operational area to support efforts aimed at combating criminality and enhancing public safety in the region.
The Force condemned what it described as the "deliberate distortion of facts and the circulation of misinformation" capable of causing public anxiety, undermining confidence in security institutions, and frustrating ongoing operations.
Warning Against Misinformation
The Nigeria Police Force has warned individuals and groups engaged in creating, publishing, or disseminating false information to desist immediately. The statement noted that "appropriate legal action may be taken against violators" as such actions could prejudice public peace and security.
Members of the public were urged to disregard the misleading claims and rely only on information disseminated through official channels of the Nigeria Police Force and other authorized government sources.
Collaboration with Community Security Stakeholders
The Force reiterated its commitment to working with legitimate community-based security stakeholders and other relevant partners in the collective effort to protect lives, safeguard communities, and combat crime across the country.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of misinformation surrounding security operations in Nigeria, particularly in states like Katsina that face significant banditry threats. The police have consistently emphasized the role of local vigilantes and hunters as critical allies in community policing and counter-insurgency efforts.
