1. FG orders freeze of terrorist financiers' assets

The Federal Government yesterday directed financial institutions and designated non-financial businesses to maintain full compliance with sanctions obligations by freezing the assets of terrorist financiers . The directive follows sanctions imposed on a Nigerian financier of ISIS, along with his three Bureaux De Change in Lagos and Kano, by the US government . The Nigeria Sanctions Committee noted that the affected individuals and entities had already been placed on Nigeria's sanctions list on June 18, 2026 .

2. Senate passes State Police Bill

The Senate on Wednesday passed constitutional amendments to establish State Police across Nigeria . The 25-clause bill provides for a dual policing system comprising a Federal Police Service and State Police Services for states that choose to establish one . Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele said the legislation was carefully designed to address fears that governors could misuse state-controlled police formations .

3. LPPC suspends Ozekhome's SAN rank

Foremost constitutional lawyer Professor Mike Ozekhome has been relieved of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) . Ozekhome was suspended by the Legal Practitioners' Privileges Committee at its 173rd General Meeting, pending the outcome of disciplinary proceedings .

4. Naira depreciates to N1,385 per dollar

The Naira on Wednesday depreciated to N1,385 per dollar in the parallel market from N1,380 on Tuesday . Likewise, the naira depreciated to N1,389 per dollar in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market .

5. NDLEA busts meth lab in Oyo forest, arrests Mexican

Operatives of the NDLEA have dismantled an industrial-scale clandestine methamphetamine laboratory in a forest at Tapa Village, Ibarapa North Local Government Area of Oyo State . A 56-year-old Mexican national and four Nigerians were arrested during the raid . NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa said the discovery shows attempts by drug cartels to turn the South-West into a synthetic drug manufacturing hub .

6. Bandits kill Chief Imam, three others in Sokoto

Suspected bandits have killed the Chief Imam of Kuda-Kuda village in Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State . The cleric identified as Liman Audu was killed alongside three persons, while others were abducted during the attack in the early hours of Wednesday .

7. Sokoto court sentences three to death for terrorism

A Sokoto State High Court has sentenced three men, including a Nigerien, to death by hanging following their conviction on charges of terrorism and arms proliferation . The convicts were apprehended on June 13, 2025, by the DSS Counter-Terrorism Unit in connection with cross-border crimes, arms trafficking and terrorism .

8. Five-storey building collapses in Port Harcourt

Tragedy struck on Wednesday morning when a five-storey building under construction collapsed along Odili Road in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, leaving one person dead and several others trapped . As of 7:30pm, rescue operations were ongoing, with victims including the site engineer and a woman who sold food to workers believed to be trapped .

9. Imo Police begin disciplinary action against officers in assault video

The Imo State Police Command has identified six police officers captured in a viral video allegedly assaulting a young man in Ikeduru Local Government Area and has commenced disciplinary procedures against them . The incident occurred at Nduhobokwe, Uzoagba community, on Monday .

10. Akpabio swears in four new senators

Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Wednesday swore in four newly elected senators following their victories in recent by-elections . The lawmakers are Ikeje Asogwa (Enugu North), Olaka Nwogu (Rivers South-East), Dayo Faduyile (Ondo South), and Danladi Envulu-Anza (Nasarawa North) .
