Adamawa Governor Fintiri Pledges Crackdown on Alleged Rising Same-Sex Activities

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has vowed to take firm action against alleged same-sex activities in Adamawa State, declaring his administration will not tolerate such conduct.

The Governor made the remarks during a visit to the northern Adamawa town of Mubi . He emphasised that his government remains committed to upholding the state's laws, cultural values, and social norms, and will continue promoting standards that reflect the beliefs and traditions of Adamawa residents .

Government's Stand

Fintiri stressed that social issues would be addressed through lawful and appropriate measures, with the administration focused on maintaining social stability and ensuring public policies align with existing laws and the collective aspirations of residents .

"His administration will not condone such act," reports confirmed .

Call for Collective Action

The Governor charged parents, religious leaders, traditional institutions, and community stakeholders to double their efforts in providing moral guidance and character development for young people .

He noted that safeguarding societal values requires the collective participation of all segments of society, stressing that families and community leaders have critical roles in shaping positive behaviour and fostering social responsibility .

Legal Context

Nigeria's Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, signed into law in January 2014, criminalises same-sex marriage and civil unions . The Act also prohibits the registration and operation of gay clubs, societies, and organisations, as well as the public show of same-sex amorous relationships .

Violations attract severe penalties, with entering into a same-sex marriage contract or civil union carrying up to 14 years imprisonment, while participation in gay organisations can lead to 10 years imprisonment .

The legislation had been welcomed across Nigeria's religious and socio-cultural spectra, though it attracted international criticism and threats of sanctions . Proponents argue the law is consistent with Nigerian culture and pre-existing criminal codes that have long criminalised homosexuality .

Fintiri's remarks have generated public discussion on balancing cultural values, legal frameworks, and social development in the state .
