Abia Govt blames old oil pipeline for explosion in Owaza community

The Abia State Government has attributed the pipeline explosion that occurred in the Umuololo Owaza community, Ukwa West Local Government Area, to a petroleum pipeline laid approximately 70 years ago .

The pipeline, part of Oil Mining Lease (OML) 11, exploded at about 1:30 am on Monday, June 22, 2026, causing a serious oil spill that affected people's homes, farms, schools, shops, and livestock .

Government Assessment

Officials of the Abia State Government, led by Commissioner for Environment Philemon Asonye Ogbonna and Commissioner for Petroleum and Mineral Resources Professor Joel Ogbonna, inspected the extent of damage and expressed concern about the environmental impact on residents of Umuololo .

Speaking at the site, Professor Joel Ogbonna stated that preliminary findings showed the exploded pipeline was laid about seventy years ago and should not have remained in use by 2026 . Engineering standards mandate that such pipelines should be replaced after approximately 25 years of service .

The Commissioner directed the oil company that owns the pipeline to immediately clean up the affected community and replace the old infrastructure to prevent future disasters . Following the assessment, state officials met with the management of the Nigeria Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), which operates the pipeline, to discuss immediate and long-term measures .

Residents' Ordeal

One of the victims, David Nwogu, said his house was extensively damaged by the incident . Nwogu claimed the pipeline, laid in 1958, had not received adequate maintenance over the years, alleging that this neglect likely contributed to the explosion .

Community spokesperson Chief Anselem Eletuo called on relevant authorities to urgently repair the damaged pipeline, contain the spill, and provide relief and compensation for affected residents .

Government Assurance

Commissioner for Environment Philemon Asonye Ogbonna assured affected villagers that the Abia State government is closely monitoring the situation, stating that efforts are ongoing to address the incident . He reaffirmed that the administration of Governor Alex Otti is determined to protect Abia communities from environmental pollution, degradation, and other safety challenges .

No lives were lost in the incident, though several buildings and properties were severely damaged .
