Umuahia, Abia State — Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has issued a strong warning to voters in the state, urging them not to trade the future of Abia for short-term inducements offered by desperate politicians.
The governor made the remarks during a public engagement on Sunday, where he addressed concerns about vote-buying and electoral manipulation ahead of upcoming polls.
“Don't sell Abia's future because of inducement from desperate politicians,” Otti cautioned. “The temporary gratification they offer today cannot compare to the lasting consequences of bad leadership tomorrow.”
Otti emphasized that the progress recorded by his administration in infrastructure, healthcare, education, and civil service reform could be reversed if voters allow themselves to be swayed by monetary or material inducements.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and protect their votes, stressing that credible elections are the foundation of good governance and sustainable development.
“Your vote is your voice. Do not mortgage it for a bag of rice or a few naira notes. The decisions you make at the polls will shape the lives of your children and grandchildren,” he said.
The governor also called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community stakeholders to join the campaign against vote-buying, describing it as a threat to democracy.
He reaffirmed his administration's commitment to transparent and accountable governance, promising that ongoing projects would be completed and new ones initiated to improve the living standards of Abians.
Otti's comments come amid heightened political activity in the state, with political parties positioning themselves for upcoming electoral contests. His warning reflects growing concern across Nigeria about the persistence of vote-buying and its corrosive effect on democratic institutions.
The governor concluded by urging voters to base their decisions on track records, integrity, and vision rather than transient gifts from politicians seeking power for personal gain.
“Abia deserves better, and together, we will protect the future we are building,” he said.
