Insurgency not overwhelming troops – Former army chief, Buratai

Former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, has stated that the ongoing insurgency in Nigeria is not overwhelming the troops, but rather a complex issue requiring a whole-of-society approach. Speaking on Politics Today, Buratai emphasized that insurgency is a "people's war" embedded within society, demanding collective responsibility from the military, intelligence agencies, government, and civilians.

Buratai highlighted challenges affecting military operations, including manpower shortages, harsh terrain, and weather conditions in the North-East. He stressed that defeating insurgency requires sustained national effort, improved capabilities, and addressing root causes like governance and development issues.

The retired army chief also emphasized the need for decisive action against terrorism financiers, stating that merely naming suspects is insufficient. He acknowledged gaps in the justice process and urged state governments to invest in development and create opportunities for young people ¹ ² ³.
